The toy list, December 2008 edition

My typical issue with being asked what I’d like for a gift: I usually just get something, if I need it or really want it, or I’m saving up for it and it’s too pricey to be a gift.

So, this is more of a list for myself, to remind myself that there are things out there that I’m saving up for.

Cycling

Garmin Edge 705 – GPS Cycling computer

Quarq CinQo – Strain-gauge power meter

Computers

Apple MacBook Pro (M98) unibody

Apple Mac mini 2 ghz core 2 duo (or better, I’m waiting to see if they get bumped in Jan 2009 at Macworld Expo.) It would be nice to bump my 1.66 c2d right now because Apple says that only the 2 ghz models will drive a 1080 display.

Television and Displays

Sharp Aquos 52″ 1080p, 120hz LCD Flat panel HDTV (LC-52SE94U)

Data Storage

Infrant ReadyNAS Pro – “Pioneer Edition” (Diskless) or 3 x 1000 GB (eAegis)

Seagate ST31000340AS Barracuda 7200.11 Hard drives (x 6, for above)

I’m on the fence about whether I should get a Tandberg Data (Exabyte) VXA-320 tape drive, with many 160/320 gb 8mm tapes… or just buy more spinning drive mechanisms, rsync data over to them, and then deliberately not spin them unless I need to recover data from them. Tapes degrade, drive mechanisms do too.
