My review of HoudahSpot as seen on MacZOT.com
When SpotLight was rolled out in Tiger (Mac OS X 10.4), I was fairly excited by its indexing and search capabilities. Not only could it find filenames, it could find content IN files. And there were all these file type plugins that let SpotLight search even more file types for content.
But I was really kind of disappointed by the fact that the interface to the search… SUCKS. Okay, I can put aside the fact that they co-opted my QuickSilver hotkey. Eventually they let us disable that to put it back on QS. But a dropdown where you could just type in one thing? And then some wonky file grouping interface for the results?
My favorite ‘find file’ dialog was the original sherlock. (I think.) You’d hit Cmd-F and get a window with a text field. You could use dropdowns to pick criteria and hit a plus button to add another line. The HoudahSpot interface reminds me of this interface AND it adds and/or capabilities as well. Pretty cool!
